In 1990, the late Dr.
George B.
Rathmann, founding CEO and Chairman of Amgen, Inc., established the National Science and Technology Medal Foundation.
Dr.
Rathmann’s belief was that the National Medal of Science and the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, awarded by the President, are the Nobel prizes of the United States and it is imperative to the country that the Medals and the Laureates be honored as such.
He founded the NSTMF to help accomplish this goal..

As a 501c3 non-profit organization, the NSTMF is not affiliated with the US government.
At the time of its founding the NSTMF executed a Memorandum of Understanding with the US Government with respect to the National Medal of Science (NMS) and the then National Medal of Technology (in 2007, the National Medal of Technology was renamed the National Medal of Technology and Innovation (NMTI)) that recognized the NSTMF as the exclusive private sector organization with respect to the celebration and promotion of the NMS, NMTI and the Medal Laureates.
With respect to the NMS, the Memorandum of Understanding is still in force.
In 2007, with respect to the NMTI, the Memorandum of Understanding was replaced by annual Joint Project Agreements between the Department of Commerce and NSTMF..

The NSTMF is an integral part of the National Medals celebration.
Acting as host to the Laureates, their families, friends and colleagues, the NSTMF provides a full range of support services including coordinating accommodations for the events and providing a live feed of the Presidential address and awarding of the Medals.
Following the Presidential ceremony, the NSTMF hosts a White House reception for the Laureates, Department of Commerce, National Science Foundation, and White House personnel.
To further honor the Laureates, in the evening following the Presidential ceremony, the NSTMF hosts a black tie gala at which the Laureates, their family and friends, and invited members of the STEM, political and media community to celebrate their achievements.
The NSTMF also records an hour-long interview with each Laureate from which a two to three minute video is developed that highlights the Laureate and his or her contribution to scientific and technological progress.

In the future, the NSTMF plans to become much more active in the promotion of the Medals and the Laureates to the general public.
Using a new web presence that is currently under development coupled with the NSTMF’s extensive database of Laureate interviews and videos, the NSTMF hopes to bring the stories of the Laureates, their contributions, and the fascinating interrelationships among their scientific and technological achievements to a new, wide audience.
Using this platform, the NSTMF will reach out through traditional and new media to help generate interest and excitement about the Medals and Laureates.
It is hoped that these efforts will raise the profile of the Medals in the eyes of the American public and at the same time enable the Medals and the Laureates to inspire young people across the country to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
