In 1865, The Turbot Family arrive in New Zealand aboard ‘Her Lady the Ganges’ setting farm in Harrisville of Pukekohe East.
The son of the family, John Turbott, becomes obsessed with inventing an onion free of doubles, with a round global body, tightly layered flesh, long keeping qualities.
After decades of rigorous breeding and careful selection, it is said Turbott burst into tears of bliss whilst cutting his onion.
