LIONS CLOSET VISION AND MISSION.

Lions International is a non-profit charitable organization which helps communities and serves humanity in various areas.
The Lions Closet will be a non-profit thrift store district project targeting both the Alameda and Contra Costa counties that will benefit low-income families and individuals by providing good usable clothing items and small housewares at a reasonably low cost.
The net proceeds of the Lions Closet will be donated to the Lions Center for the Visually Impaired in Pittsburg, and the Lions Center for the Blind in Oakland.

Our first “Open for Business” occurred on Saturday, April 18, 2015, in the alley way at the Oakland Blind Center on Broadway Street.
The opening was a success in that our goal was to sell items of clothing and we accomplished just that.

Our “Lions Closet on Wheels” makes our thrift store mobile (and unique) and our next strategic plan is to operate out of the LCVI parking lot in Pittsburg and then target the local flea markets on a scheduled basis yet to be determined.
In the near future, plans will be to procure a regular retail store in either county.

This simple yet brilliant idea came from a visionary Lion of over 45 years of dedicated service to Lions International:.

The committee consisted of Lions Leo Macias, Lilyan Sequeira , Maureen Powers, Gary Miner, Linda Griffin, Joni and Jim Shattuck, Ed Cossart and Ed Schroth.
Three new committee members were later added to the team – Lions Eleanor Lew, Ed Szaky and Doris Lum..

The pictures taken at our first opening on April 18, 2015 depict Lions volunteers setting up racks and tables of clothing.
The day was spent giving out flyers and drawing the foot traffic to the Lions Closet in the alleyway.
Lion Bill Ridle and his wife Darlene provided hot dogs, chips and a drink for the volunteers.
We were also joined by none other than our PDG Denny Grotrian, Susan Grotrian and Lion Norene Miranda.

Exhausting day but it was well worth it.

History in the making…… A vision-- to paper--to reality.
On September 1, 2016 the Lions Closet procured its retail store at 625 Railroad Avenue in Pittsburg.
Our GRAND OPENING occurred a month later on October 1, 2016.
The efforts of so many Lion volunteers made this happen.

The Lions Closet’s mission is to become a legacy district project (in the centennial year of Lions) and uphold its image of an enterprise that helps the community with emphasis on the blind and visually impaired.
