What started out in 2000 as an old-school goth rock experiment for four fiercely individual souls has metamorphosed into a kaleidoscope of sounds that has held the band’s cult following in thrall over the many possibilities of a Late Isabel song, where it can take them deep inside themselves, and imagining the girl that haunts and creeps in the band.

The debut album Doll’s Head (2004) was the sound of beautiful and playful dissonance—of broken glass, silk rubbing against skin, the city at midnight, eyes popping out of their sockets—reminiscent of the work of their musical heroes Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, The Velvet Underground, Talking Heads.
It captured the imagination of Filipino listeners who had not quite heard the kind of artsy, independent music that The Late Isabel had let loose.

The interim work to the upcoming second album, Lackadaisical (EP, 2012), was the complete opposite of Doll’s Head.
It was the sound of a mechanical dirge—ominous, dark, gritty—and yet keeping the tension from exploding was a beat moving like clockwork, a primitive rumbling again reminiscent of The Velvet Underground.
In Lackadaisical could also be heard a strong inclination to art rock.

But the true gem in the Lackadaisical EP is the eponymous single off the forthcoming second album IMPERIAL.
The song starts out fragile like a haiku, then soars in the climax.
It is an oriental fantasy quite unlike anything heard in bands these days.
The upcoming album is a journey through vastly different soundscapes, but with “Imperial”, The Late Isabel achieves its ambition to write a song that exists outside of trends and, indeed, outside of time.
