The Interlochen Victory Garden

Grand-traverse,

Michigan,United-states - 49643

Detailed description is My attempt in making a garden in the way the nation grew victory gardens during WW2, and also provide food for the less fortunate in our community.
The Interlochen Victory Garden story.
.
At 53 I found myself with no job, no money due to a failed business attempt, a bad back diagnosed with Spondylolisthesis, depression and anxiety I have had all my life, I was a workaholic, and worst of all I had no desire to do anything and I had no hobby's..
.
We started a business for my wife a couple years earlier that was taking care of our finances, and my wife was encouraging me to find out what is was that I wanted to do for the rest of my life..
.
I just wanted to stay home, be left alone and never leave.
But I knew that wasn't what was good for me.
So I started doing some soul searching and found I had a desire to start a homestead.
What that meant to me was learning how to grow as much of my own food as possible in an organic way, and using non-GMO seeds so I could save my own seeds so I could grow real food..
.
I started doing a lot of research and was learning about many gardening methods.
I decided to follow the "Back to Eden" method.
It just made sense to me.
But I knew I had to have raised beds for the most part because of my back issues, and because I wanted to do this for the rest of my life.
So I started out figuring out how to do all of this and make it so I could do it for the rest of my life.
The plan calls for 28 raised beds made from corrugated steel and pressure treated wood framing on the outside.
They will be 2' T x 4' W x 12' L.
The total square feet of the planting area in the raised bed garden will be about 1350 sq.
ft.
There will also be about the same amount of sq.
ft.
of garden on the ground for vertical growing plants and plants that need space to grow and can't be trellised..
.
As you can imagine, the raised beds will require a lot of dirt.
This will be expensive and require a lot of labor to fill.
I am making plans to build a portable compost sifter that will ride on the top of the raised bed and allow the good compost to be separated from the material that needs to be composted longer.
The good compost will fall into the bed, and the bad compost will fall into a wheel barrow to go back to the compost pile a short distance away.
.
.
So today I find myself laying the foundation for a large garden with a separate yard for the chickens who will be my compost makers, a small orchard using dwarf and columnar trees.
I have already built a small barn, and put in fencing.
I also have a connection for wood chips.
Last year I was given over 200 yards of them and gave about 150 yards away because they would have turned to dirt before I got to used them.
Besides, I was able to be a place where people could come to get them free, and the tree service company is always looking for a place to drop them.
It is a win, win, win situation.
.
.
I am calling it The Interlochen Victory Garden for two reasons.
First, with what is happening in the world today makes me want to learn how to take care of myself as much as possible.
If things do get bad in this world where people are out of work, the power goes out, or we have to fend for ourselves I would like to make that as easy on my family as possible.
I am not a doomsday prepper.
I am a planner, and I do believe that America is going to fall one day.
I also know that if this happens, the vast majority of Americans will not have the knowledge or tools to survive.
I believe that having a victory garden like the nation did during WWII is a part of the answer, and I need to learn this lost art and also learn how to preserve the food it produces..
.
The other reason I am doing this is because I am a Christian, and I believe that there is victory over the powers of darkness in this world.
I promise that I won't turn this page into a place for sermons, but my faith is the basis for everything I do.
I hope you will understand that..
.
I am also looking to produce a surplus.
This surplus will be going to a food pantry at a local church that helps a lot of people.
One of the concepts I am thinking of is growing dried beans that will be able to be used all year long.
I am even thinking about dehydrating all of the ingredients for bean soup and vacuum seal them.
All the person will have to do is put it in a pot with the appropriate amount of water and let is slowly cook until everything is re-hydrated and cooked.
I hope to provide something that can provide many meals..
.
So the work will continue as I am up to it, and I have the money to do it.
At this point it looks like it will be the rest of my life's work.
Except for the orchard I believe it will be at least a couple more years before I ever get to see the fruit of my labor, pun intended..
.
If you would like to know more, or have a desire to help me, I will be happy to talk to you about the possibilities..
.
Thank you for your interest, and your prayerful support..
