Detailed description is The Hangar ministry exists to love, serve, and impact the lives of our homeless and under resourced neighbors by addressing the issues of homelessness head-on in our community through support, resources, and relational discipleship..
We're Dusty & Laurie Kirk, and our journey with the homeless and impoverished really began when we began serving the Community Meal at the First Lutheran Church in Waco.
Through this serving, relationships grew, and we felt a deeper calling for serving them.

In March of 2016 we were blessed with an opportunity to partner with a couple from Church Under the Bridge, Ted and Becky Jones, who frequented the places where the chronic homeless lived on the streets, off the grid, in the bush, along the railroad tracks and in the overnight shelters.
They introduced us to the homeless and showed us where and how they lived.
They mentored us and showed us how to love them where they are.
How to help them without hurting them.
We developed relationships with many of these homeless, and began a ministry to help meet their needs.
We began bible studies with them, just sitting and visiting with them.
Hearing their stories.

We also began to learn about the available resources (or not).
Though there are an abundance of resources available, we noticed there was not a comfortable place for these people to be during the day, no day shelter.

God began to speak to us, showing us the need and placing opportunities in our path.
Although we had no idea what God had in mind (or how He would make this happen) we began looking for a place in the area where most of the street homeless frequent.
Ongoing development in the Downtown Waco area made finding a practical place impossible, but we continued to pray and seek..
In July of 2016, while attending a bi-weekly bible study with the homeless at the Church Under The Bridge’s Community Garden (for the Homeless), under the 17th Street bridge, we noticed a vacant Quonset hut.
It had been there all this time!! For sale for several years, we are not sure why we didn't take notice of it sooner.
It seemed too big? How God? What are you thinking God?.
It would fit the need perfectly, and was in an ideal location.
We began praying about the building and developing a vision for what we could do with it.
Many of our contacts with helping the homeless expressed a desperate need for such a place.
We researched what other homeless day shelters provide and asked our homeless friends what they would like to see in such a place.
Those conversations and those prayers have turned into a vision.
As we have prayed and had conversations, Gods voice and plan has become clearer and clearer: It will become our residence.
No, we are not giving up our family home in Lorena (at least not yet) but from this place we can continue building relationships, direct and connect our brothers and sisters from the streets to the resources that are already in place, encourage, grow, and be family.
One of the biggest reasons for homelessness, that we have seen, is broken relationships.
Yes, there are addictions, and mental illnesses, but even those can have a relational cause and affect..
The Hangar will give us a place to live in community with and among these people that we have grown to love, and hopefully enable us to deepen those relationships to a place where love and trust will enable healing..
