Detailed description is A Bauhaus-inspired reunion and metallic masquerade for VisArts undergraduate and IMDA graduate alumni celebrating UMBC's 50th anniversary! Many historically famous art schools have traditions of costume balls, the best known being the century-old celebration given by the students of the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
At other art and design institutions, such as the Weimar Bauhaus in the 1920s, students and faculty often created elaborate installations and costumes for their events.
One noted example associated with the Bauhaus was the Metal Party of 1929, where attendees dressed up in metallic costumes, and slid down a long metal shoot to enter a ballroom decorated with mirrors and metal spheres.

For the UMBC Golden Ball we will use the Metal Party of 1929 as our inspiration to create a ‘Golden’ Ball.
UMBC's colors are black and gold.
Gold is also a very popular metal, and traditionally in the U.S.
and other Western countries, gold is presented as a gift on a 50th wedding anniversary.
So, with this idea we bring together in one event historical precedent, school spirit, and celebration of UMBC's 50th year..

We will invite our guests (most of whom will be Visual Arts alumni) to create black and gold masks, or costumes to wear at the ball while we share an evening of entertainment and art.
This event will showcase the talents of Visual Arts alumni, but also highlight UMBCs contribution to the vibrant arts community in the Baltimore region and beyond.
