A BRIEF HISTORY OF TE KOHANGA REO O TE PUAWAI O TE AROHA .

Following a meeting of concerned parents and spearheaded by Aunty Dolly Wiari, John Wikotu and kuia Bessy Poumua, the seed of Te Puawai o te Aroha was sown in the month of April 1984.
Supported then by young mothers of the Whanganui East area, the idea was nurtured into fruition and encouraged by the positive responses from the wider community.
From its humble beginnings in the old Labour Party rooms in Poutini Street, Te Puawai o te Aroha now enjoys a rather unique situation having moved house into it’s new premises.
The now Kōhanga building traditionally opened with a dawn ceremony on Sat 1st October 1988..

Our Kōhanga Reo like all others operates under the umbrella of Te Kōhanga Reo National trust, implementing the founding statements that are within Te Korowai, and providing the best possible programmes for our tamariki that implement te Reo me ōna tikanga (the māori language and traditional customs) that can only be provided by ‘Te Whāriki’ (Early childhood Curriculum māori version) .

Staff play a huge role in guiding our tamariki through their journey, through positive encouragement and praise our tamariki take on leadership roles that build on confidence, reciting whānau origins and genealogy are almost as important to māoridom than life itself, customs and traditions such as karakia, haka, whaikorero, karanga and poi are also acknowledged as being a part of who we are, and so to see our tamariki carry these taonga through to Kura Kaupapa Māori or Kura Reo Rua is the dream by which we thrive..
