Detailed description is Teen Advisory Board ( TAB).
TAB is a teen-led countywide advisory board that seeks to reduce risk factors within their community.
TAB strives to connect education, achievement and youth to their community in a positive manner, through community service.
The Teen Advisory board has been in existence for the past 8 years and is comprised of youth from all 21st CCLC programs.
Students displaying leadership attributes and influence with their peers are nominated by school day staff, after school staff, or district administrators.
The program provides a dynamic learning environment where students develop leadership abilities, create connections, and impact their communities.
Participants meet monthly for ten months to complete community service projects that support individuals or service organizations, participate in the Stanford’s Youth Engaged in Leadership and Learning (YELL) curriculum while working throughout the year to plan and conduct an annual youth summit and student lock-in.
TAB service projects are planned by senior TAB members utilizing the four elements of service learning: Element One - Meets a real community need, Element Two - Coordinates with a community agency, another school, or the community at large; Element Three - Helps foster civic responsibility; Element Four - Provides structured time for reflection.
YELL is curriculum developed originally for implementation in an after school setting.
The research supports the impact of YELL on participating youth.
Research highlights three important ways that YELL promotes youth leadership skills: (1) fostering strong communication skills by valuing young people’s ideas and opinions; (2) encouraging analytic thinking through a research-based approach to social change; and (3) creating multiple opportunities for positive community involvement.
The combination of these three leadership skills is essential for YELL’s success with young people.
TAB events bring students from seven separate schools together.
Annually the Youth Summit hosts more than 250 students from each district to devote a morning to service projects and an afternoon in a town hall meeting for youth.
TAB students plan and facilitate each service project and are panelists during the town hall meeting.
Additional panelists include youth who have struggled through and overcome adversity including drug addiction, mental health issues and teen pregnancy.
TAB will coordinate its first annual multidistrict lock-in, rotating host districts annually.
The lock-in will promote teen wellness and healthy relationships while providing an evening of student recreation.
