The primary mission of thr department has been to professionally prepare students to enter the dynamic field of media and communication.
Located on campus in the Yokum Communications Hall for the past 25 years, the department has been one of the largest in the Division of Arts & Science, serving an average of 400 majors.
It has had both a strong history of forensics and a debate team which won many national and regional championships.
The remnants of this debating culture still exists in the department through multiple sections of CMM 101 (Public Speaking), which are offered to hundreds of students every semester as part of the college’s General Education curriculum.
In 2005, the department changed its curriculum from two majors, Mass Media and Speech Communication, to five majors, which cover a wide range of communication-related careers and fields.
Such changes were implemented after studying and researching student demands, evolving technologies, and changes in the communication industry.
Today the department offers majors in: TV/Video Production; Audio/Radio Production; Digital Media; Broadcast Journalism and Communication Studies.
It offers two minors: Media Management and Radio.
