Pavilion, Picnic Tables, Fire Pits, Grills, Walking Trail, completely Handicap Accessible.
Summerlyn Memorial Park was made possible by a gift of property from Vicki and David Bandstra in memory of their daughter Tena Summerlyn, "Summer" Bandstra, and a community effort to prepare the space for public use.

"In the beginning God created…." God turns on the lights, divided the waters and lands, planted some oaks by the river, propagated fish and fowl, and formed us from the dust to be the beneficiaries and stewards of this great Garden.
Then, gazing across the vast expanse of creation God observed, "This…is good!".

A lot of water has gone under the bridge since then…a LOT of water! But to this very day our souls are best nourished, our bodies strengthened and our minds cleared when we feed on the first fruits of God's great creation.
The sound of the bird's song, the smell of honeysuckle in the Spring, bubbling brooks and yes, even raging rivers…all of these reminders, gentle and not so gentle, of the primal nature of life, the base of our being, the essence of human existence..

And nobody teaches us that better than the children…watching their reaction to the outdoors and all that it offers is simply amazing.
We may become air-condition loving, couch dwelling, digital screen staring hermits…but that is a LEARNED disposition! And as I have grown older it has become painfully aware how much "unlearning" I have yet to do.
Nonetheless, to sit on the hillside, walk along a garden pathway, gaze into an evening fire, dip a paddle in the green waters of the ever-moving river, watch my granddaughter "Ooo" at the passing butterfly…all of these restore my soul..

Nearly 26 years ago God gave David and Vicki Bandstra another set of eyes on the world…Tena Summerlyn, "Summer." Born healthy and whole, she contracted encephalitis in the hospital and would live out her 18 plus years without benefit of mobility, vocabulary, and many of the things that most of us assign to a "normal" life.
Yet, this so-called "abnormal" child would become supernatural in many ways, reshaping the way her parents and all who gathered close would understand growing up, living life, being happy, and making a contribution to the world.

Many things brought us to this place on this day - the Bandstras, a community working together to "recreate" a space for recreation, reflection, relaxation…but MOSTLY we were led to this day by a little child, a child named Summer who, for all of her inabilities, saw and experienced in creation her greatest opportunity to interact with God and God's children.

Vicki said, "Summer's favorite thing was laying in a hammock under a big tree enjoying the sunshine, seeing & hearing leaves rustling , .
and the birds singing." Imagine...
just for a moment...
her freedom to do that without the distractions to which the rest of us often fall prey.
"Maybe we should plant some azaleas here." .
"Where should the firepits be placed?" .
"I wouldn't have picked that green for the pavilion.".
"This place needs a swingset!".

Whatever Summer had in physical limitation was balanced with a near-limitless ability simply to enjoy, savor, drink in, the touches and sounds and sights and smells of the world around her..

Recently, there was a picture in the Elba Clipper of Vicki and Hannah Borinski installing the beautiful fountain just beyond us.
As I looked at the little concrete girl towering over two neighbors and friends working (and recreating) together, it became symbol and substance of what Summerlyn Park means to our community..

Like the rest of God's creation, this park will survive and thrive based on our willingness to be good stewards of its beauty, caretakers of its artifacts.
And if we are good stewards, those who come after us for generations will be the beneficiaries of this little corner of Eden.
Oh, a snake or two, no doubt, will pass through.
And a few apples likely will be consumed.
(No, not THAT kind of apple!) But the story of a special young lady will give life and health and a few stollen moments of redemption to all who linger here.

You are a treasure to us all! And Tena Summerlyn Bandstra, you've done well in this world…and we are grateful.
