Detailed description is A longtime hairstylist and resident of Fort Myers, I've recently moved back to the area from Denver CO.
and am making magic happen in my chair once again! Originally from Kentucky, my family moved to Fort Myers in the early nineties and I enrolled in a local Cosmetology school.
I was a smart, quirky kid, fascinated by science, chemical reactions and attempting to build countless “inventions.” We lived in a very small rural town and as the youngest of the Barnes kids, I came into this world eight years after the others.
I spent plenty of time alone on the farm, in the woods and working on projects with my dad.
He taught me that any job I did was worth doing right, and so I took great pride in all of my “creations,” measuring twice, cutting once and proudly stamping my name on them all.
My mom was a domestic goddess who could woo anyone with her heavenly fried chicken, collard greens and chocolate cream pies.
Her kingdom was her home, her kitchen was her playground and I loved to watch her gracefully creating her own kind of magic that brought us all together at the supper table each evening.

If you would indulge me for just a moment, I’ll tell you how I came to the understanding that making people feel beautiful was my calling..
There was a time when I was starting to flex my stubborn pre-teen individuality; and the constant banter between my father and I was about whether I’d live at home with them until I was forty and marry a respectable preacher, OR move out at eighteen and get started on a child-free life with a career.
(you can guess whose ideas were whose) Oh I had a hundred fantastical ideas of what I wanted to be when I grew up, but most of them were conjured up just to get a rise out of my dad.
Then one day something happened that set my heart and soul on the path I have traveled for almost twenty-five years now.

Ours wasn’t much of a musical household; I had come to love the blues and the classic country greats from my dad.
Music was in the truck or the garage but not so much in our house, unless it was her prized Elvis records of course, but on this one particular day the Kings voice could not be heard.
I had come out of my room and down the hall when I heard something, something light and musical and beautifully carefree.
I quietly peeked around the corner to see my mom standing at the stove in a pale yellow dress.
She was humming and swaying to the tune in her head when she looked over her shoulder and flashed a sassy wink and a smile at me.
Who was THIS? My mother was meek and quiet and usually in what I called her worker bee mode.
She had a bunch of kids and a generally cranky husband so I watched her trying to figure out what had happened that day that had created this calm, confident, joyful fairy that now stood in our kitchen? I had no clue what it was at that point but I decided right then and there, THAT’S what I want to do.
THAT’S the job for me; I’m gonna figure out what happened and then I’m gonna do that for other people.

Suppertime came with lighthearted chitchat and uncommon laughter at the table, my dad finally told her how pretty she looked and asked her if she had her hair done that day.
It hit me like a bolt of lightening.
She felt Beautiful! Someone in her day had listened to Her, gave Her what She wanted and she felt like a million bucks! The mystery was solved and I now knew where I had to focus my attention.
I graduated from high school early and enrolled in LaBaron Academy of Beauty soon after we moved to Fort Myers.
