2003 erfolgte, von den Studierenden ausgehend, mittels Urabstimmung eine Reform der Studierendenvertretung.
Aus dem zuvor bekannten StudierendenRat (StuRa) bildete sich der StuKo.
Die Studierenden wählen demnach nur ihre FachschaftsRäte, der StuKo wird nicht mehr direkt gewählt.
Die FachschaftsRäte der einzelnen Fakultäten entsenden jeweils vier ihrer Mitglieder in den StuKo.
