Strohl Inn

11125 Falls Avenue

El-paso,

Texas,United-states - 80819

Detailed description is Standing in the shadow of Pike's Peak, Strohl Inn is a haven in the Colorado mountains.
Strohl Inn was built in 1959 by a man from Baytown, TX, for his wife on their 25th wedding anniversary and was originally named “Silver Ann” in recognition of the event.
It was built as a sister cabin to the one just to the East, which was named “Hobby Haven.”.
.
Rod and Dorothy Strohl bought the cabin in the summer of 1979 from a realtor from Colorado Springs.
It had come into her possession from Lee Ansell, of Galveston, TX, who now owns “The Ponderosa”, just up the road, to the right.
At that time, the cabin had no heat, except for the bathroom wall heater, and it was being leased to some men from Albuquerque who were using it as a fishing cabin.
We promptly changed the name to “Strohl Inn”..
.
We added electric baseboard heating the first year and later, insulated the exterior walls and crawl space.
A project our three boys still remember “fondly”.
In 1981, we painted the deck and trim a bright blue, which we thought was delightful.
Apparently not everyone in town agreed.
When visiting the historical museum one day, Mrs.
Dorothy Hart Conn, a longtime resident and philanthropist, asked if we owned property in the area? When we enthusiastically told her we did – and where we were located – she said, “Oh, in that cabin with the terrible blue porch?”.
After we reluctantly confirmed, she followed that up by informing us that one should never change the cabin name either.
We hurried out and two years later, we painted the deck and trim the brown color that it is to this day.
(We figured, however, that we bought the cabin so the name should be ours to pick!).
.
We also spent Christmas at the cabin in 1981 and had a wonderful time! We cut down our own Christmas tree from the mountainside behind the cabin and strung it with popcorn and cranberries.
We stayed warm the first few days but the pipes froze solid the third day, when the temperature reached -7 degrees! We went to down into town to the Falls Motel and actually rented showers every other day to clean up – and we got along just fine.
We did have to purchase a portable potty chair for midnight emergencies though, and we all have fond memories of those blue bags… .
.
In 1995, we added a gas furnace when our son Brian and his family moved into the cabin for a time.
He had transferred to Colorado Springs for his job and they spent a year living in Green Mountain Falls.
In the years that followed we have updated the tub and shower, installed a new kitchen counter and upgraded appliances, added a lovely stone border around the cabin, and even added a small bathroom in the guest bedroom!.
.
Our interest in Green Mountain Falls began in 1955.
As a child, Rod began visiting every summer with his parents, staying at a cabin owned by Southwestern College, a wonderful private school in southeast Kansas that the Strohl family has long been affiliated with.
That cabin, located about halfway up Hondo Avenue, on the left side, was purchased as a vacation destination for employees and faculty of the college and it consisted of three separate apartments.
The college eventually sold the cabin and it has since been converted to a single-family home..
.
After we were married in 1963, we began to return to Green Mountain Falls with our own family, renting a cabin known as “Limber Pines”, owned by Mr.
and Mrs.
Harvey Douglas, of Winfield, KS.
Mr.
Douglas was a high school woodworking instructor for years and he and a friend, by the name of Roberts, had built “Limber Pines” themselves.
.
.
While taking a "fateful" morning walk on their last day of a 1979 summer vacation trip, we noticed a realtor placing a For Sale sign in the front yard of “Silver Ann”.
We called immediately and wrote a contract on the cabin that very afternoon.
We closed later that month.
