Stop the Pain was founded in 2013 by Michael Wayne Chavis, a retired North Carolina State Highway Patrol Sergeant.
Throughout his career, Michael was frequently confronted with traumatic events which eventually took an emotional toll and led to a personal struggle with drug and alcohol addiction.
Entering and successfully completing treatment, Michael was able to gain a full understanding of the needed awareness, programs, and community support required for the effective prevention and treatment of substance use.
Stunned upon hearing of the overdose of a young man, Dwayne Paul Jones, whom attended his childhood Church of Prospect United Methodist, Michael was inspired to return to his birth community and delved into creating a program to help prevent substance use and the senseless loss of life that it creates.
Michael was a passionate man who was dedicated to his job, family, and community.
He was also a die-hard North Carolina State fan.
Tragically, family, friends, the community, and Stop the Pain lost Michael in a house fire in December of 2016..
