There's a site called spokeo.com that's a new online USA phone book w/personal information: everything from pics you've posted on FB or web, your approx credit score, home value, income, age.
I can't personally verify all of this (and some of you might be able to - I want to start things off from the beginning with facts) but I know that it's CRAZY what they do have.
Some have said you can even purchase someone's SS# but I'm not sure about that.
Either way...they've gone WAY to far and we need EVERYONE'S help to stop it NOW.
Furthermore, some of this information is inaccurate and they are SELLING IT.
I'm contacting an attorney right now but for starters, do two things:.
.
1.
Remove yourself by searching your name, find the URL of your page, then go to the bottom right corner of the page and click on the Privacy button and then click on the "here" link in the e-mail you get.
You may be listed multiple times if you have had multiple addresses (even crazier) so you can use different e-mail addresses for each (since they only let you use one e-mail per listing - but anyone can remove anyone so how stupid is that?).
In any case, there is a limit from one computer and then you have to do it the next day.
I haven't tried what I'm about to suggest but being the geek I am, there is two possibilities: cookies or IP address.
In the first case, using a different browser should allow you to remove a couple more.
In the latter, using a different computer in your house (if you have one) should help out unless they try to be crafty with some IP address grouping or something.
Worse case, you can remove it the next day (or so it says)..
.
2.
Invite the whole world to this page..
.
3.
Get pissed.
.
4.
Take action and let's start a movement.
One person I know has already contacted the news.
Do whatever you have to do but most importantly right now...tell everyone about this so they can remove this and we'll figure out how to get a real grass roots movement going once we have some momentum!.

Update on 1/7/11.

*Disclaimer: I’m not an attorney and am not giving any legal advice*.
I spoke with an attorney yesterday that specializes in privacy rights and here is some info:.
I’m sure a lot of this may seem obvious but it’s how it comes together and the details that can make a difference.
First of all, let’s look at what we do know for sure and then what we don’t know..
We do know:.
A lot of us are extremely upset and feel that this information shouldn’t be public.
The sad reality is that a lot of it is public (more on that later).
We know that some of the info (even if public) is difficult to find without this engine (Spoke).
This includes some older addresses.
Some databases aren’t easily found and/or accessible.
Per the attorney, privacy cases are very difficult (especially these days) and defamation or any other sort of claim that we might attempt are notoriously difficult to win in court.
Since there really isn’t much case law history that is applicable, we’re dealing with laws that are 50-100 years old that don’t apply anymore.
Really, a case of fitting a square peg into a round hole.
.
What we don’t know.
What is all the information that is shared? What data is available after paying? Where SPECIFICALLY is this information coming from? How is it verified? What kind of policies do they have in place to validate data? What kind of privacy policies do they have in place? Consumer protection? What kind of security policies/procedures are in place?.
Some food for thought.
While it can certainly be argued that a lot (if not all) is available SOMEWHERE, what I’m really bothered by and (I envision applies equally to you all) is that not only is it AGGREGATED in a single location but it makes it easier or simpler? For example, a friend of mine’s old address (his mother’s address) was listed and he was very shocked that I knew it (I then explained that I got it from Spokeo.com and what else was there and he is also furious).
The interesting thing is that when I searched for it on Google and his name with it, nothing came up.
So, IF it is accessible in some public domain, then where and why can’t I find it on Google? I received a private message on Facebook (thanks for that btw…good info – you know who you are) that discussed that most people don’t know where to get this info but “it’s out there”.
Let’s assume that is the case for a moment: it is “accessible”.
I think we need to push the courts to define what is “accessible” and what is “public domain” because I’m seeing a disconnect here.
If most people don’t know where to get the info, is it REALLY accessible? Sure, some diligent/persistent/resourceful people can track it down but isn’t there a difference between making it EASILY and READILY available? Furthermore, aggregating it that so that it’s accessible with a picture, home value, address, former addresses, income level, and all the other “goodies” that are displayed (and who knows what else when you pay for it).
I think aggregration of data is another issue that needs to be addressed..
My main question is: where do you draw the line? Since there isn’t much case law on this topic, this is NOT going to be an easy battle.
It’s going to be a long journey but I’ll tell ya folks: it isn’t going away and it will only get worse from here! SOMEBODY has to step in and make a difference.
I’m begging/pleading you, let it be us and let’s fight, fight, fight.
Invite everyone you can and let’s start a revolution!.
So, what are the next steps anyway? Obviously, the BIGGEST step is in gaining some support and growth.
We’re going to win this in numbers and that’s probably the only way.
Secondly, the attorney suggested to first and foremost get a response from Spokeo.
Send them some questions professionally drafted and see what the response is.
Questions such as Where do you get your data from, How do you validate it, what is your privacy policy (i.e.
questions like I referenced above under what we don’t know).
Let’s see their response time, how likely they are to cooperate, IF they cooperate, if they are shielding anything, etc.
Their response could potentially be used against them.
Then, I’ll take that back to the attorney and look from that point on.
The odds are good though according to him that we’ll need to take this somewhere such as to the attorney general’s office (he said that typically they would get involved in something like this).
That being said, issues such as jurisdiction come about.
I remember from my Internet Law course that there are 3 types of jurisdiction: personal, territorial, and subject-matter.
Rather than getting into the specifics, you can learn more from Wikipedia here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jurisdiction.
I also asked if we should contact the media.
He said you COULD but basically we’re better off going the “try to cooperate with Spokeo” first route.
What are your thoughts, comments, etc.? Do you agree with this logic? Should we take the route of approaching Spokeo and asking them questions? If so, what questions? Do we contact the media now or hold off and see what happens (I know of at least one person that has already contacted a local tv station here in Detroit)? Do we try to build major support through whatever way possible through social media, etc.? (I say yes and that we get AS MANY people supporting our cause as possible) .
Speak up people and let’s make a difference!!!.
Side note: I’m personally planning on pursuing this and maybe it will turn into a class action suit (which I hope) but if anyone is wanting to jump on board, don’t hesitate to speak up.
Either way, if you’re frustrated/furious about this, you CAN make a difference by spreading the word and getting involved in whatever way you find appropriate.
Thanks everyone!.
