The Salesian presence in Kollam began in 1975, when the Parish of St Stephen (erected in the year 1800), with its Church and adjacent property was handed over to the Salesians in perpetuity by the then Local Ordinary, Rt.

At present the parish comprises of 2108 families (about 9000 Catholics), mostly fisherfolk belonging to the backward and depressed classes.
