John is called the Apostle of Charity, a virtue he had learned from his Divine Master, and which he constantly inculcated by word and example.
The erstwhile Maharaja of Mysore Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, reigning during 1930′s desiring to cater to the spiritual needs of the man & families in his regiment stationed at Bangalore ordered the provision of accommodation within the regiment area for practicing their faith.
In compliance with the orders of the Maharaja of Mysore two tiled room quarters was alloted for all the religious communities ( Hindu, Muslim & Christians) in Mysore Infantry lines, (Where now stands the defence CIL building)..

The Christian community in the regiment was predominantly of Roman Catholic faith and of Tamil origin.
They began at this prayer hall a “Jabakoodam” (Praying Community) with St.
Theresa of Child Jesus as the patron saint.
On the request of this Catholic Community the resident priest from St.
Francis Xavier’s Church (St.
John’s Road, Bangalore) commenced the celebration of Sunday Morning Eucharistic celebration.
