In 1859 a Franciscan priest, Fr.
Pamfilo da Magliano, founded the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany in the southwestern area of New York State.
Its early ministries focused on the education of children and young women in the town of Allegany.
In 1879, responding to the educational needs of children in Jamaica, West Indies, the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany became the first U.S.
congregation of Sisters to establish a foreign mission.

Today, over 230 Sisters serve in the United States, Jamaica, Brazil and Bolivia.
They minister to those in need, especially the underprivileged, the undernourished, the outcasts, and the victims of injustice and violence.
