Our goal is to cultivate native seed stock to market size in less than twelve months..

In June of 2013 the off bottom oyster farming program in Alabama received the permit to market oysters raised on oyster farms.
This was our goal going into the class.
We now have this great opportunity to raise native seed stock from the central gulf coast to cultivate the Southern Pearl Oyster Farm oyster.
These oysters are suspended in a water column off of the sea floor.
Our objective is to raise a pleasingly plump oyster that is smooth from barnacles, create a deep round cup shape and produce fresh thick meat.
With this method our crew will be responsible for maintaining the oyster with bi weekly cultivation..
History of Bayou La Batre.
Bayou La Batre is one of the top three seafood production ports on the Gulf Coast.
It was founded in the late 1700's.
The seafood industry has always been a major source of income for our community.
It has also brought a measure of notability to our community as referenced in the movie Forest Gump and a recent reality TV show..
Ecological Effects.
Since oysters have a hard surface, this helps build a natural ecosystem for marine life.
Over time, with oyster mortality and the buildup of excess shells on the bottom, this allows sand and sea grass to form along the outside perimeter of the reef.
Oysters attract small marine organisms which in turn attract larger marine life.
They are also excellent filter feeders that enhance water quality.
