Detailed description is Supporting String Music Education for Red Wing Youth since 2007.
SoundStrings has been offering Suzuki Violin lessons to Red Wing youth through Community Education beginning in 2007.
Red Wing High School alum, Kale Olson Reed, was our first instructor and taught up to 15 students for 3 years.
Luke Hubbard, a student working on his PhD in music performance at the U of MN at the time, became our second instructor in 2010 commuting to Red Wing weekly.
Kathleen Lamb and Teresa Edgar followed in the following year, and in 2012 Jessica Penn took over as lead violin teacher and has continued ever since.

In 2009, we began a Kindergarten Suzuki Violin Pilot Project at Sunnyside Elementary with the help of teacher, Robyn Freatman, who had worked in a similar program in Portland, Oregon.
Funded by private donations and grants, our Violin Project works with teacher-identified students before and after school in age related groups learning the basics and having fun performing their knowledge.
Since beginning this Project, more students are engaged each year by introducing new Kindergarten, First and Second students to our Project.
In total, over 40 students who would not have had the opportunity to learn violin have had the chance to try something new and find success in new ways..

The Suzuki method is a string education system based on the teachings of Shinichi Suzuki who was the motivation and founder of Talent Education in Japan in the early 1960s.
His realization that all Japanese children can speak Japanese set him on course to develop one of the world's greatest methods for educating children musically.

Our board is comprised of string players, parents, grandparents, and community members who value music education and desire to keep string music alive in our community.
We continue to build momentum toward our goal of developing a youth orchestra opportunity for all of Red Wing youth.
