Detailed description is The Smith Mountain Lake Water Quality Program began in 1987.
It is a collaboration between Ferrum College and the Smith Mountain Lake Association.
The Smith Mountain Lake Water Quality Monitoring Program (SMLWQP) at Ferrum College started in 1987 and has been continuously monitoring water quality at Smith Mountain Lake since that time.
The program works in conjunction with The Smith Mountain Lake Association (SMLA) and lake residents.
Dr.
Carolyn Thomas, limnologist and Professor of Environmental Scientist at Ferrum College is director of the program.
Other Ferrum faculty researchers and staff in the program are: Dr.
Delia Heck, assistant director and GIS specialist, Dr.
Bob Pohlad, algae and invasive weed specialist, Dr.
Maria Puccio, chemist, Dr.
David Johnson, chemist and Ms.
Carol Love, lab and field coordinator.
SMLWQP employs numerous Ferrum College students during the summer, some of which complete their internship with the program.
Volunteers monitors, residents from the lake, assist with basic monitoring at various levels after being trained by the staff and students.
The SMLWQP lab is certified for water quality analysis by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.
