On Thursday 8th January Whicham Parish Council were granted planning permission to go ahead with a transformational beach front development at Silecroft.
This is an exciting design led development which has been several years in the planning stages after the idea was first suggested as part of a community consultation which took place in 2011.
The vision was initially developed by South Copeland Tourism officer Mark Holroyd in conjunction with a local resident’s action group and the ongoing support of Copeland Borough Council Regeneration team.
This partnership worked with Architect and designer Martin Howell to produce a feasibility plan which was eventually presented to the Whicham Residents in May 2014.
Following this consultation the project was further developed and finally submitted to the Lake District National Park Planning Authority in September 2014..

The beach front development at Silecroft is envisioned to become Cumbria’s premier beach destination, offering a world-class visitor experience for all ages.
It will be a critical tool in attracting new visitors to the Western Lake District as well as catering for the significant number of users who currently use the beach for a wide variety of recreational activities.
The project will effectively replace the existing car park and toilet block which is no longer fit for purpose and replace these with modern facilities and a layout which will maximise the natural beauty of the environment without reducing the rugged appeal of the beach and sea views..

The intended outcomes are as follows:.
1.
Improve Access : Improved access to the beach, and to views of the beach and in particular to enable wheel chair and buggy access to embankment, space for horse box parking, space for boat launching/trailer parking.
There will be parking spaces for up to 75 cars with a general overflow area for approximately a further 20 cars..
2.
A Cafe Facility.
A quality café with space for up to 30 customers at once, serving locally sourced food & drink, open all year round.
This will create new jobs locally and add value to the present visitor experience, as well as offering some adventure tourism activities.
The cafe would include access to wi-fi/broadband services.
Additional outdoor seating will enable the cafe to serve more visitors at high season.

Toilet facilities: Provided free for all users, upgraded to include disabled facilities..

Showering facilities: an outdoor shower for surfers, swimmers kayakers etc..

Retail: A small retail area within the cafe selling local merchandise, beach equipment and the like..

Adventure Sports Hub: Working in collaboration with local providers create a sports hub for turn up and go/hiring activities for kayaking, surfing and paddle boarding type activities plus mountain biking and guided walking..
7.
Employment: it is hoped to create 3 full time equivalent jobs in the café and retail area with further jobs being created by the opportunities in the adventure sports industry and the improved economic conditions in the local hospitality supply chain..
A Community Interest Company has been formed to manage the commercial aspects of the facility in such a way that enough income can be generated to cover the maintenance costs of the car park and any further profits will be invested back into community based projects in Whicham Parish..
