Detailed description is 八雲立つ風土記の丘の概要と歴史 　八雲立つ風土記の丘は、全国で６番目の風土記の丘として昭和４７年にオープンしました。現在では１７の風土記の丘があります。平成19年7月21日、それまでの資料館から展示学習館としてリニューアルオープンしました。.
　八雲立つ風土記の丘一帯は、奈良時代に編さんされた「出雲国風土記」のくにびき神話を起源とする意宇郡の中心にあたる地域です。この周辺には縄文時代、弥生時代の遺跡をはじめ方墳や前方後円墳などの多くの古墳が分布し、また国庁、国分寺といった奈良時代の政治、経済、文化の中心地でもあり、出雲国造家にゆかりのある神社や寺もあって、文化財の一大宝庫です。.
　八雲立つ風土記の丘は、それらの遺跡を整備し、総合的に保存活用する目的でつくられました。これは国の指導による風土記の丘構想の一環に基づき、全国で６番目にできた施設で、島根の古代文化紹介と保護を目途としています。.
　その中心となる展示学習館には、風土記の丘地内出土の遺物をはじめ出雲国風土記の写本、県内の古代史をかたる多くの資料が展示してあり、地内には「額田部臣」の銘文入り大刀が出土した岡田山１号墳や風土記植物園もあります。
