New in 2016, SHIFT’s Emerging Leaders Program brought together 34 leaders in the outdoors ages 19-31.
The Emerging Leaders were a demographical mirror of America.
Urban millennials and people of color—the demographics identified by land managers, the outdoor rec industry and conservation advocates as the keys to the next generation of stewards—worked alongside their Caucasian counterparts to lead the Festival’s conversations.
This evolution of traditional conservation became the Festival’s highlight.
The Emerging Leaders represented organizations from Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, Latino Outdoors, The Wilderness Society, Sierra Club Outdoors, and Conservation Legacy, to the National Park Service and Bureau of Reclamation, among others.
A primary objective for 2017 is to support this diverse, dynamic collection of leaders to bring together stakeholders in their home communities to build consensus around outdoor issues, thus serving as ambassadors for SHIFT.
