It has been diagnosed by the world renowned Dr.
Johnny Appleseed as Green Thumb disease.
There is no known cure.
Surprisingly, I have met many others that share this same affliction, from all walks of life.
Men, women, black, white, big, small, gay, straight, blonde, brunette, Jewish, Muslim, you name it.
I thought I was on an island by myself in the ocean of plants.
Knowing I'm not the only one, has inspired me to embrace my illness and seek a cure, which I believe I have found.
Turn my backyard into an oasis of green, a refuge from the nonsense and rifraf of the outside world, the magic pill for my fellow afflicted.
Grow, grow, grow, and when you have run out of room, stack the pots and grow some more.
My disorder, combined with my habit of overdoing things, has led me to where I am today, and what the yard has become.

Being that I like to to prove others wrong and go against the grain I decided awhile back to start fooling around with tropicals and exotics.
Native desert plants are soooo boring.
You dont bring sand to the beach or a sandwich to the buffet so why bother with that stuff.
Plumeria, mango, banana, curry, guava, lychee, things like that.
I quickly leardned the do's and dont's of this hobby.
Yard placement (sun/shade exposure), soil amendment, and proper watering techniques.
Understanding these 3 things will mean the difference between life and death for the trees.
Trial and error is the best teacher.
There is no shortcut around this.
I aquired more information thru T + E in the first year than 5 years of reading the useless garden blog chat sites.
Getting my hands dirty was the best scource of info.
Every yard is different.
35 ave + Bell is a completely different world from Laveen, from Cave Creek, from Buckeye.
Even within my small 1/5 acre I have a few unique microclimates.
Front and south yard is full all day sun, east and north is morning early afternoon sun.

I like to container grow.
I also have trees in ground.
Most people think that a tree needs to be in the ground in order to produce fruit.
Completely untrue.
A plant will grow in a glass of water as long as its getting the nutrients it need.
A container will do just as it sounds like, contain.
Contain the trees roots from spreading out, keeping the tree from getting large.
I can keep 5 mature 15 gallon size trees in a 10x10 area or have 1 large tree.
I would rather have 5 different types of mangoes that fruit at different times of the year than 1 tree that grows only 1 type and all at once.
I don't want to eat 3 mangoes a day, especially the same type.
I would rather have 1 a day for 4 months and have multiple flavors.
Second, I can control the micro climate, which means I can grow almost anything here.
I grow coffee.
I grow cinnamon.
I grow guavaberry.
In Phoenix! Thru the summer and winter.
Because they are in containers I can move them depending on the season to wherever they are happiest.
Spring and fall they like full sun.
Summertime means morning sun afternoon shade.
Winter is on to the patio in case we get below 32.
Some trees stay out in the sun year round.
Mango, guava, banana, sugar cane, mulberry, to name a few.
Container growing will allow you to have a larger variety which in turn means more fruits and flowers and enables you to control the climate..
