Incident:.
On Wednesday, 26th Nov 2008, Shri Sushil Kumar Sharma (Assistant Chief Ticket Inspector, CST Mumbai) was on shift duty (4pm – 12am).
He had finished having snacks near the station manager’s office when he heard the gunshots.
His colleague asked him to take cover and rush to the safety of the office.
It may have saved his life.
But Sharma chose to refuse.
He immediately headed to the control room to inform the staff of the firing and alert them about the danger posed to incoming trains.
Despite several requests from staff at the control office not to go out, Shri Sharma without caring for his life was rushing towards the Mail Line Concourse to offer help to the injured.
However, before he could help other passengers in saving their lives, two bullets hit him immobilizing him instantly.
One bullet hit his shoulder and the other perforated his lungs.
Minutes later, Sharma was trying to hold on to life.
While the incident could have occurred between 9.30 pm and 10 p.m., no medical aid arrived till about 2.30 a.m.
when the railways resumed their operations.
At this time, his family members, who were frenetically calling his phone, finally heard a voice at the other end.
However, it belonged to a police officer, informing them that the former had been severely injured in the incident.
However, the family again got a call in the early hours of Thursday informing them about Sharma's death at Nair hospital where he was reportedly admitted after the incident.
