Wegen des Sieges der Konföderierten unter General Bragg über die Generale der Nordstaaten Rosecrans und George Henry Thomas wurde die Nordstaatenarmee gezwungen, nach Chattanooga auszuweichen.Nach dem Verlust von Vicksburg und der verlorenen Schlacht von Gettysburg im Juli 1863 erkämpfte das Heer der Konföderation einen Sieg über die Union in einer der verlustreichsten Schlachten des Bürgerkrieges.
