Santa Tecla es un municipio del departamento de La Libertad en El Salvador.
Cuenta con una extensión territorial de 112 km² y una población de 121,908 habitantes (censo oficial, 2007)..

La ciudad fue fundada el 8 de agosto de 1854, por decreto del presidente José María de San Martín con el nombre de Nueva San Salvador, con la intención de sustituir a la ciudad de San Salvador , la cual había sido destruida casi por completo debido a un terremoto.
Aunque posteriormente, en 1858, el gobierno abandonó el proyecto de trasladar la capital a Nueva San Salvador, esto no impidió el desarrollo de la nueva ciudad que se convirtió en un próspero centro de producción cafetalera, siendo actualmente una de las ciudades más desarrolladas del país..

En 2003, el nombre de la ciudad fue legalmente cambiado a Santa Tecla, nombre con que ha sido conocida tradicionalmente.
