El municipio de San Melchor Betaza se localiza dentro del distrito de Villa Alta en el estado de Oaxaca, en la región de la Sierra Norte, en las coordenadas 96°09' de longitud Oeste y 17°15' de latitud Norte, con una superficie aproximadamente de 37 km², a una altitud media de 1480 m.s.n.m.
y el clima predominante es templado con lluvias en verano.
Limita al Norte con San Andrés Yaa, al Sur con Villa Hidalgo Yalalag, al Oeste con San Baltazar Yatzachi el Bajo y San Juan Tabáa, al Este con Totontepec Villa de Morelos; su distancia aproximada a la capital del estado es de 120 kilómetros (INEGI, 2010).

El pueblo de San Melchor Betaza fue fundado aproximadamente en el año 1521, donde vinieron algunas familias zapotecas a poblar el lugar.
Pocos años después vinieron los españoles y con ellos los frailes, mismos que hicieron la conquista de este pueblo sin hacer uso de las armas quedándose desde ese tiempo y formando sus edificios, prueba de ello es la iglesia católica que aún se conserva y que data del siglo XVI.
Sus títulos les fueron expedidos el 23 de julio de 1794 por el juez privativo de tierras y aguas y se les puso posesión de sus terrenos el 08 de agosto de 1800 por el C.
