Detailed description is Sam Mecum was elected as one of three new Manheim Township Commissioners, and the first Democrat ever, in the General Election Tuesday November 5, 2013. . Background/Family. . Sam grew up in Lancaster County, went through the Manheim Twp school system, graduating in 1966. In High School he was on the County championship tennis team for two years, and a member of the choir, Candlelight singers, and the National Honor Society. He has two sisters and two sons who are also MT graduates. Sam received a BA in History from Penn State, with Distinction (cum laude) in 1970, then graduated from Villanova University School of Law in 1973. . . While living in the Philadelphia area after law school, Sam met Debbie Frantz through mutual friends and they were married in 1974, at an outdoor ceremony in Valley Forge Park. A busload of boy scouts went cruising past the Memorial Arch at the conclusion of the wedding ceremony, which may have been prophetic, because Sam and Debbie had two sons who were both boy scouts, one who reached Eagle rank. The boys are now 36 and 32. Alex being a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Penn State, having studied at Salamanca University in Spain for a semester and completed an internship with the Weekend TODAY Show in NYC. Now he is working as a realtor in New York City. Travis, a 2 ½ year veteran of the Peace Corps (Uzbekistan and Republic of Georgia) and recipient of a Master’s Degree in Public Policy Management from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Travis spent the summer of 2010 in Liberia on a CMU sponsored internship, trying to help the newly born democracy there get on its financial feet. He now works for GTech, an environmental protection/recycling company in Pittsburgh.. . Professional Life. . Sam has been engaged in the private practice of law in Lancaster County since 1974. He has been an employer and made payroll for many decades. Sam is currently a shareholder in the firm Reese, Samley, Wagenseller, Mecum & Longer P.C., handling civil lawsuits, Family Law cases, real estate, writing Wills and engaging in probate/Orphan’s Court issues. He has co-presented an annual seminar for lawyers on Landlord-Tenant Law for 10 consecutive years. He received the Access to Justice Award for pro bono legal service in 2002, and was President of the Lancaster Bar Association in 2006, after having served 10 years on the LBA Board of Directors while chairing the Law Review Committee. Twice (2005, 2007) Sam was rated Highly Recommended by the LBA Judiciary Committee for a position on the County bench, and in 2005 came very close to being the only Democrat ever elected to a Judgeship in Lancaster County.. . Church and Community. . Mr. Mecum has been extensively involved in church-connected boards/committees: . Chancel Choir at First Presbyterian Church in Lancaster since 2004. 11 years as an active Member of Session as a Ruling Elder . 8 years Chair of Joint Finance Committee, and chaired the Stewardship Committee for 2 years. Board of Directors, Open Arms Christian Child Care Center. Troop Committee, Boy Scout Troop 102, 1995-2001. Member, Lancaster Rotary Club (Music and Planet Earth Committees) . . He has been a Board Member and officer in nonprofit organizations devoted to historic preservation: . Wheatland Foundation, 6 years on the Board, two years as President. LancasterHistory.org Board of Directors since 2009, now Secretary of the Board. Grave Concern Inc. which seeks to protect and preserve Lancaster County historic burial places -- Sam is Vice President.. . In 2006, Sam was elected as one of 11 members (out of 36 total candidates running) of the Government Study Commission, which spent two years on a volunteer basis scheduling numerous public meetings, interviewing witnesses, and studying the intricacies of County government in Pennsylvania. He was one of the major drafters of a proposed Home Rule Charter, which would, if it had . passed in 2008, have saved the County hundreds of thousands of dollars per year
