Detailed description is BIRD ISLAND, MINNESOTA —The year was 1979.
The computer industry was exploding onto the marketplace and two hometown boys were opening their computer business, Rural Computer Consultants (RCC)..
Among the many advancements since IBMs distribution of the 1400 series (34s and 36s) in 1960, 1979 brought the first electronic spreadsheet and business program for PCs, many that did not even have hard drives.
Also in 1979, Epson released the MX-80 which soon became an industry standard for dot matrix printers and the first modem was marketed which became the industry standard for modems.
Texas Instruments entered the computer market with the TI 99/4 personal computer which sold for $1,500! One might find something comparable to these old relics lurking in the memorabilia room at RCC..
After completing their college training for programming, Brian and Kevin Sheehan, sons of Fabe and Lorraine of Sheehan’s Gas in Bird Island, MN, got together to come up with a better way for brother, Mike, to run the family business.
After much discussion, they purchased rights to an accounting software package, gutted it out, and recreated it to run the propane business.
Mike was a willing participant to test this project and was always quick to tell them if something worked, didn’t work or if he needed some other special capability added to the system.
“Mike was not necessarily a ‘computer person’ so we knew we had to keep it simple so that anybody could use it.” says Brian Sheehan, RCC President..
Two years into the business, Kevin and Brian found themselves in the middle of a growing industry with a software program that was in high demand.
They added programmer, Brian Fagerstrom.
.
Working closely with the family business and watching industry standards, Kevin and Brian continually adapted the software to keep up with the unique and individual needs of the family-owned propane business and companies across the country using their Fuel Distribution System (FDS).
Today, however, in addition to the small family owned customers, RCC also has customers with multiple locations in multiple states.
.
In 1984 RCC wrote the 2nd generation of the fuel product.
Then, in 1987 they acquired Bird Island Computer Services.
.
Kevin and Brian’s sister, Susie, had adapted their program for the propane industry to use with her clothing stores.
She kept track of more than 6,000 inventory items within the program in those early days.
In 1996, they asked if she would consider being a co-owner of their software business.
She closed the final store in December of 1997 and started to work at RCC in the spring of 1998.
At that same time, programmer Brian Fagerstrom was also offered a partnership in the business, bringing ownership of RCC to four..
From those humble beginnings, in a small office in back of the family’s propane business, RCC has grown considerably and has moved into St.
Mary’s Convent which has three floors of offices to house 50 employees.
Employees at RCC include ten programmers, three sales executives, three office staff, fifteen support personnel and four hardware specialists, in addition to the four owners.
Most recently, in 2008, RCC acquired PSI, a propane industry software firm in Birmingham, AL.
Keeping the office in Birmingham and their staff, this acquisition greatly increased the already large customer base of the Fuel side of the business adding a second office which is referred to as RCC South.
Today, RCC has customers in 48 states and internationally to include, Abaco, Bahamas, New Zealand, Canada, Egypt and Israel..
Growing up in the propane business, every single one of Sheehan children have memories of riding in the bulk truck with Dad and helping with his business, which included painting tanks and doing the office work.
Keeping in mind his ‘economical’ ways, they have always kept the Fuel Distribution System affordable and easy to use.
Clearly, a foundation of hard work and good family ethics are the beginnings of this success story.
As the ownership of RCC passes their 30th year in business, they reflect on the many changes they have witnessed over the years, not only in technology but in the team of people who have assembled to help make their success what it is today.
“We have witnessed countless examples of great teamwork.” says Brian Sheehan.
Much of this team effort stems from the nature of the work: it’s challenging, and everyone must do their part for it all to come together.
Most of it emanates from the character of our people and their superior ability to serve others.
It’s one of RCC’s strongest suits and something that is never taken for granted.
.
Sheehan says, “We have worked hard to find, attract and retain employees who have the right make-up to provide the one thing we all do: serve others.”.
Support and support personnel are key components to RCC’s 30 year success story.
In closing Sheehan says:.
“I would like to thank all of our customers in having such a close and family-like relationship with us.
Watching our father build a successful company on service and support, we have chosen to do the same.
Again, thank you for allowing us to serve you.”.
