Detailed description is Our one of a kind furniture is crafted from local barns and farm structures using tools from the 18th and 19th century.
Every piece produced by RoseLand is a commissioned, one of a kind creation.
Each furniture item is tailored to our client’s specifications, and the raw materials are harvested from local barns and farm structures that have seen the end of their useful life.
We use traditional tools from the 18th and 19th centuries to construct our furniture and accent pieces.
These include implements ranging from wooden-bodied hand planes and spokeshaves to hand-cut nails and hand-rived dowels.
Individual items require a substantial number of man hours to harvest, mill, develop and finish.
For example, a simple looking Adirondack chair will entail 30 hours of work, and a trestle or harvest table may take well over 100 hours to complete.
.
.
RoseLand compositions are meant to be of heirloom quality and to communicate the history of the local area.
Our old-growth lumber retains some of the vintage tool marks from the mills and even the ax cuts from the felling and hewing process.
Wherever possible, the wood is left in its original state, and we use the existing mortise and tenon joinery to fashion a new work.
.
.
The Name: RoseLand.
When we decided to develop this business on of the first things we needed was a name.
Obviously using a composition of our two names was logical.
McRic, FarRose, Jimeric, RoseyMc, or McFarsenthal never made it back from the bar.
Then one afternoon at school Jim comes up to me and slaps the name down on my desk and says, “I’ve got it it’s perfect.” In the end our name comes from the combination of our last names, Eric Rosenthal and Jim McFarland.
.
.
Who we are:.
Eric Rosenthal .
I am a gym teacher at Hillsborough High School and I’ve been working there since 2008.
Prior to teaching I ran a small landscaping company from around 1996 through 2007 called Tree Boy, where I primarily did stone patios, walkways and plantings.
At the age of 28 I went to college and got my degree in PE from Kean University.
.
.
Woodworking has nearly always been in my life, all through high school in woodshop, summer jobs in construction, building and creating have been who I am since I can remember.
The inspiration to work with wood comes from my father, who for a time in his early 20’s worked as a forest ranger out west.
I love the simplicity of hand tools especially the really old tools, and making something without a plan or directions.
Everything I build I do as I go without a blueprint or anything more than an idea.
For me working without the confines of a prescribed design is when I find inspiration.
.
.
I am certainly not a purest, I do start the building process with chainsaws, table saws, and bandsaws to get the lumber into manageable pieces.
However, the joinery, dimensioning, and shaping are all done primarily with hand tools.
Yes, sometimes when the wood is fighting me I resort to a power but, the process of working the wood by hand is what I strive for in all my pieces..
.
Currently my process is simple: I find barns or farmhouses as I drive by, ask the owners if I can have them, tear it down and then turn it into furniture.
I would like to go even further and get a small sawmill harvest fallen trees or rough down some of the larger barn beams to make my own lumber.
For now I am working with the wood as I find it by using the existing tenons and joints or by simply incorporating a mortise into the design.
I do not know where this venture is heading and that is how I like it.
