My name is Mark Jurus – the man behind Rockin Walls – and I am a certified and experienced craftsman specializing in dry laid stone construction.
With every wall I build, I bring not only my skill as a craftsman, but my eye as an artist to create walls that are structurally sound, durable as well as visually appealing..

I built my first wall in 2007, but there were many things throughout my life that came together to get me where I am today.
First of all, I'm fourth generation English.
Dry laid stone construction is very prevalent in UK with the oldest examples in the world such as SKARA BRAE Prehistoric Village, BROCHS, thousands of miles of centuries old boundary fences and retaining walls.
My grandfather worked hands-on in a slate quarry in Bath, PA, and for 50 years my parents owned a small business working as custom jewelers selling fine American crafts.

Throughout my formative years, I was often in the presence of very talented artists.
I admired the way they learned and perfected their crafts, and from an early age, I realized I too love to work with my hands.
As a child, I spent hours outside building small houses and cities.
As I got older, I often went on summer trips with a friend's family out to western Maryland where we would go white water rafting.
On our way back from these trips we always made a stop at Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Water House.
I was in awe of the seamless integration of nature and human design..

By high school I wanted to be an architect and really began focusing on my drafting skills, though I struggled to master the math I would need for a career in architecture.
In 1986, after completing high school, I enrolled at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) with the intention of studying interior design.
However, after taking several classes in graphic design, I switched my major.
In 1990 I graduated with a BFA in Visual Communication Graphic Design.

Many years later in 2007 I was asked to build my first dry laid stone wall.
This wall made me realize this was my calling! I needed to learn more about the craft.
I went off to study dry laid stone construction and tested extensively in Vermont and in Kentucky on historic blue grass fences.
I have tested and worked with DSWA (Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain) certified master stonemasons from Scotland, Ireland, England, Canada and the USA.
Their guidance helped me become the waller I am today.
