Attestata già prima del Mille e appartenuta nel corso dei secoli XII e XIII alla nobile famiglia dei Tignosi, la rocca fu spesso, per la sua rilevanza strategica, al centro delle vicende storiche della Repubblica di Siena: nei decenni a cavallo tra Trecento e Quattrocento rappresentò il quartiere generale della potente famiglia Salimbeni (che si opponeva alla repubblica con l'ambizione di istituire una signoria in città) e negli anni della Guerra di Siena (1555-1559) fu uno dei capisaldi dello stato senese che, nelle terre intorno a Montalcino, resisteva tenacemente all'invasione imperiale e medicea.
Con la successiva annessione di Siena al Granducato mediceo, la Rocca di Tentennano venne a perdere il secolare ruolo di baluardo militare, conservandone tuttavia l'aspetto: un massiccio torrione costruito su uno scoglio e chiuso da un recinto murario.
Attraverso il cortile, il visitatore può accedere alle sale che un tempo ospitavano la guarnigione di soldati e salire fino alla sommità del 'maschio', dalla quale si gode uno straordinario panorama.
