To be African for me means a myriad of things. Both sides of my family came to Africa in the 1860's, so I consider myself truly African. Whenever asked abroad what I miss most about Africa; it is the light! Light creates the image and Africa has her own unique, unmistakeable, constantly changing light. There is also something visceral about calling Africa home - the sun, the wildlife, the PEOPLE, the space, that special feeling of Ubuntu created by being amongst people of your own type. To be African for me means to embrace all that is African and to relish the privilege of living and working on this extraordinary continent. The sense of unusual potential linked with a 'can do' attitude appeals especially. Having travelled with Kingsley and family on the Afrika Odyssey Expedition in 1993 as the start of a four-year sojourn travelling abroad, and having looked at the options overseas, I am ecstatic to be African, and to call Mama Africa home! Rob Caskie
Thank you Rob for taking the time to share our incredible history and for bringing it alive. It really was such a privilege to hear you talk. One guest in particular, Carl, mentioned to me that your talk alone has made his entire trip to South Africa worthwhile. He definitely intends to return to experience first-hand a stay at Fugitives Drift in the near future. Donna Drimie
We have steadily sold you ever since I did my visit with you, how ever long ago it was. I had one talk from you and the other from David and both were equally good and passionate. Obviously David’s death I assume forced you more into the limelight but you seem to have done so magnificently. Every guest we have ever sent you has consistently raved about the quality of the experience. Not many properties we sell across Africa are that consistent so well done and keeps it going, Best regards, John Spence
Thank you so very much indeed for the wonderful hospitality and kindness you gave to us. You so unselfishly gave us a great deal of your time, taking us out on the three tours in spite of all the other guests. The two days we all had at Fugitives Drift, was truly a remarkable and memorable experience for all of us and there simply is no substitute for being in situ as we were with you. The hospitality and warmth you conveyed at the lodge is so authentic and welcoming. The visit to Fugitives was with out doubt the high light of this trip and I am so grateful to you both for making it possible. However on top of that Rob you are the one who truly makes the entire experience so exceptional in terms of the battle fields. Your passion, in depth knowledge, insight and exceptional public presentation skills and talent in the way you convey and put across all the detail of the battles makes for a real and outstanding exceptional and memorable experience. Rob, you have a remarkable and truly gifted talent which combined with your wonderful wit and demeanour makes for such a highly impressive and unforgettable experience; you brought so much life, honour, dignity and emotion to the battles; there were those who I spoke to who were close to tears, including myself as a consequence of the remarkable way you spoke. You are truly a superb raconteur and you richly deserve every bit of praise and recognition that should and must come your way. Kindest and warmest regards to you, Clive and Adele Bennett
Your talk was brilliant, perhaps the best ever at the Club - certainly in my experience. You had an enthusiastic but also demanding and in parts sceptical audience - many of them are well up on SA history, and there is an active history society-within-the-club - and the General Manager was inundated with compliments. I had to go early, which was not easy! David Williams
I received an e-mail from Jerry this week that he was leaving Africa --and was so absolutely pleased with his visit to Fugitives Drift. I guaranteed him that he would be happy ---as my trips there were two of the best experiences I have had anywhere in the world. The historical tours and the great hospitality are clearly enough at Fugitives Drift (World Class in my opinion). David will always be etched in my memory as one of the most compelling people I ever met. And you have done a great job with continuing his legacy. I was so impressed on my second visit with how Rob kept us all so riveted and made me feel like a friend. Thank you so much for giving Jerry the experience that I knew he would have when I encouraged him to go to your wonderful lodge. I only wish I could have been there with him. He already said that we need to go back together. All the best to you. Regards, Mark Yde
Rob, your presentation was once again the finest I have seen. You managed to maintain enthusiasm which made each guest feel it was just for them and not something you do day after day. A special talent but so important. Best regards Paul Wainsford
We both enjoyed every minute of your presentation, I didn't realise you had had problems with the AN and sound system, but even without that we thought you were great. Kind regards, Lynette Smulders
You were amazing Rob! I am in Geneva at the moment and The GM here couldn’t believe your talk, he is heading your way! Your talk was incredible, mind blowing, but then I knew it would be, it always is! Rob you are a legend bud! Wayne Coetzer
Thank you all so much for a perfectly perfect 2 days that we spent with you. It was such a joy being back on the property again and being part of what you do each day. I am sure it may sometimes feel like 'haven't we done this before?' for you all but for us it felt like we were the first people ever to be so lucky as to hear this great South African story told in two extraordinary places by a remarkably talented story teller. Steve & Nicky Fitzgerald
It was a real pleasure to have you as our guest speaker at Prize giving last week. Thank you not only for your enjoyable speech, but also for being able to fit us in to your busy day. It was good to have an ex-Headboy back with us again and also for me to meet you as I know both your sister and brother. My best wishes to you as you enthuse and excite people with stories of our battlefields and have the pleasure of meeting interesting folk out there. Once again, I really appreciate you having been our guest speaker. Go well ! Kind regards, Rob Langley
I have been lucky enough to have had some really great travel experiences in my life, but the most amazing was our weekend last year at Fugitives Drift in Natal. Rob Caskie is an experience and his passion and knowledge is mind-boggling. I wish there was a way to let each and every South African, but especially children, to re-live this remarkable piece of our history. If you don’t know where you are coming from, you have no idea where you are going. At the risk of sounding like a cliché, the food was amazing, service beyond excellent, rooms brilliant (I took pictures – one day my bedroom will look like this!) (I hope!), view magnificent, Rob – words fail me, the whole experience incredible. I cannot recommend this enough. Just go there yourself, and you will understand. Kind regards, Hannelie Berrangé
I can tell you that the evenings proved hugely successful. The letters and emails have been pouring in, full of phrases such as "brilliant orator", "spell-binding", "passion", "must visit the site" etc. You can be very pleased with the response which will only cement your efforts to build a business in the UK. Thanks again for making both evenings the success that they were. The clients were delighted and of course JOHIM gets the credit! Stay well, John Anderson
I received wonderful feedback on your session which, considering the early morning timing, was no mean feat. Your presentation was exceptional and many of the delegates have shown interest in joining you at the lodge to enjoy the experience further. I have no doubt we will be in touch on future occasions. Kind regards, Samantha Daines
Please accept my most grateful thanks for your willingness to lecture to our group of teenagers who were completely enamoured with your topic and your fabulous story-telling. I know that they are not yet aware of of the privilege with which they were presented by your presence, and I hope that, in time, they will appreciate the value of your input and expertise in your subject and passion.
It was a personal whim which drove me to include the Battlefields in our cultural tour of SA, but it was not without the people involved at Fugitives' Drift who inspired my inclusion for the education of our children at our school in the Boland.
Many many thank for your time, warmth and sincerity which you so clearly displayed to us while we were with you. Kind regards, Jennie Wessels
Rob exudes passion and enthusiasm and is without doubt one of Africa’s best storytellers, bringing Zulu history to life. The Phinda Mountain family was invited to Rob’s talk, and an impressive 60 staff (and some guests as well) turned up!
Our big mistake was to be at Fugitives for only two nights when we could have easily been interested and occupied for far more. Our visit to Isandlwana with Rob was an experience to the level of an emotional journey. His expertise in story telling and his hold on his audience was remarkable. We were spell bound. We shall return. Sincerely, Barrie & Liz Walker
Debbie and I are still both in awe of our Battlefields experience - and I underline the word "experience". We learnt, we were entertained and we were given time to reflect. It was a spiritual, emotional, intellectual, joyful and physical experience. You can carry the mantle of your "brother" David proudly and without apology. You were fantastic. We have relived the chapter in our lives often and in different ways : listening to the CDs, talking to one another, sitting in silent thought, and enthusiastically sharing it with others. To say thank you or to congratulate you is a meagre response from us. Instead we will spread the word about you and how special you are, and, perhaps most valuable of all, the humanity of both Zulu warrior and British soldier - their honest obedience, patience, loyalty, bravery and courage. "Abake babonana bayophinde babonane futhi" - those of us who have truly seen one another, will surely see one another again! With best wishes and kind regards, Colin and Debbie Hall.
