Sono pochissime le famiglie di pizzaioli che attraversando l’ ‘800 e il ‘900 sono arrivate ai giorni nostri per consegnare alle generazioni future un bagaglio di ricordi ed esperienza.
Tra queste famiglie troviamo i Mattozzi, che fondarono oltre 150 anni fa la Pizzeria Ristorante di Largo Carità (oggi Piazza Salvo D’Acquisto).
Il locale nacque nel 1833 sotto il nome di “Le stanze di Piazza Carità” per mano di Antonio La Vecchia ed era frequentato dagli intellettuali della città, come il filosofo De Francesco.
Dopo la generazione dei Mattozzi, nel 1959, il locale venne acquistato da Alfredo Surace, che era stato direttore di sala della Pizzeria Mattozzi di via Marchese Campodisola dal 1930.

Tuffatosi nella nuova impresa con la moglie Concetta Perrone, Alfredo portò con sé anche i due figli, Franco e Lello.
Il Ristorante Pizzeria, che oggi conta circa 120 coperti disposti su due livelli, incluso quelli esterni sulla piazza, è arrivato ai giorni nostri vedendo i due fratelli a lavoro.

Lello, con Vincenzo Pace, fondò nel giugno 1984 l’associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana..
Il locale ha l’aspetto immutabile di una vecchia cantina, con il banco per la manipolazione della pizza, attualmente occupato dal figlio di Lello, Paolo, in mezzo alla sala storica con la cucina alle sue spalle.
