Detailed description is RARS, Lumle is a western regional wing under Nepal Government, Nepal Agricultural Research Council (NARC) Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Lumle is situated at 30 km northwest of Pokhara in the WDR of Nepal.
Founded initially as Lumle Agricultural Center (LAC) in 1968, it was responsible for the training of Ex-British Gorkhas in improved agricultural technologies, which could be implemented by them upon returning to their villages in the hill districts of Nepal.
In 1975, funding for the center was transferred to the United Kingdom (UK) Government’s Overseas Development Administration (ODA), and LAC was given a wider mandate for agricultural research, extension and training, within a command area covering 1,100 square km and about 15,000 farming households in different parts of the districts of Kaski, Parbat and Myagdi..
In 1987, LAC was given responsibility for improved agricultural technology generation for the four hill districts of Gorkha, Lamjung, Tanahun and Syangja, as part of the then World Bank funded Hill Food Production Project (HFPP).
In 1989, LAC became part of the then National Agricultural Research and Services Center (NARSC), now Nepal Agricultural Research Council (NARC), and was designated as Lumle Regional Agricultural Research Center (LRARC) for the WDR, with responsibility for technology generation for eight hill districts, the seven given above plus Baglung District.
In 1993, NARC reorganized, Wheat Research Station at Bhairahawa and added the responsibility of Regional Center, while Lumle was reverted to the status of an Agricultural Research Center, known as Lumle Agricultural Research Center (LARC).
In July 1995, the responsibility for extension activities was handed over to the Department of Agriculture (DoA), the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) and the Department of Forestry (DoF).
LARCs’ RCA was extended including Palpa, Gulmi and Arghakhanchi.
In July 1998, LARC was handed over to NARC from DFID and named as Agricultural Research Station (ARS) Lumle.
In July 2003, the station was upgraded to regional status as RARS including five more districts (3 Terai and 2 Mountain) covering the whole WDR as RCA..
The goals of RARS Lumle in line with its mission statements are towards settlement of hill farming households to:.
• Increase agricultural production and productivity.
• Generate employment and income opportunities for agricultural entrepreneurs.
• Improve nutrition of hill agricultural entrepreneurs and their families, and .
• Sustain and improve the available natural resources.
RARS Lumle has set following objectives to achieve its goals.
• Generate improved agricultural technologies to increase production and productivity for improved livelihood of hill agricultural entrepreneurs.
• Help improve dissemination of technologies to the agricultural entrepreneurs and stakeholders through effective linkages, training and exchange visits, and through supply of improved seeds and stocks, and.
• Help enhance the capability for the National Hill Agricultural Research System through development of effective research process, cadre and organizational network..
