Detailed description is Das historische Kölner Rathaus, im Zentrum der Kölner Innenstadt gelegen, ist aufgrund seiner Bauzeugnisse als ältestes Rathaus Deutschlands anzusehen.
Seine dokumentierte Baugeschichte erstreckt sich auf einen Zeitraum von über 800 Jahren.
Die Verwaltungsbauten des Historischen Rathauses sind ein Baudenkmal im Sinne des Denkmalschutzgesetz Nordrhein Westfalens (Denkmalnummer 114).LageDer Kölner Rathauskomplex gruppiert sich, teilweise mit miteinander verbundenen Gebäudesegmenten, am Rathausplatz in der Kölner Innenstadt.So befinden sich das zuerst entstandene mittig gelegene Historische Rathaus mit seiner vorgelagerten Renaissance-Laube, der später errichtete Rathausturm und der zuletzt angegliederte Verwaltungstrakt zwischen der an „Obenmarspforten“ beginnenden Judengasse und der Bürgergasse an der östlichen Seite des Platzes.
Durch späteren Grundstückszukauf an der Ostseite des Hauptgebäudes grenzt der Rathauskomplex fast an den auf tieferem Niveau liegenden Alter Markt.Der sogenannte „Spanische Bau“, nach Rathaus und Turm geschaffen, begrenzt den heutigen Rathausplatz an der Nordwest-Seite.
Er liegt zwischen der „Portalsgasse“, der „Bürgergasse“, der Straße „Große Budengasse“ und dem „Theo-Burauen-Platz“ an seiner Nordseite.
Im Westen, an der Straße „Unter Goldschmied“, endet das langgestreckte Gebäude wieder an der „Portalsgasse“ und dem Rathausplatz.
An dem südwestlichen Eck- und Endpunkt „Obenmarspforten / Unter Goldschmied“ befinden sich drei markante Gebäude der Stadt: Das ebenfalls historische Farina-Haus, das Haus Neuerburg am Gülichplatz und das sich südlich an dieser Ecke des Rathausplatzes anschließende Museum, das die Namen des Kölner Kunstsammlers Ferdinand Franz Wallraf und des Kölner Kaufmanns Johann Heinrich Richartz trägt.
