تأسس بنك قطر الوطني (ش.م.ع.ق) (مجموعة QNB) في عام 1964 كأول بنك تجاري قطري، يتقاسم ملكيته جهاز قطر للاستثمار بنسبة %50 والقطاع الخاص بنسبة الـ %50 الباقية.

وقد تمكن البنك من تحقيق ذلك من خلال النمو القوي في محفظة القروض والسلف بنسبة 33% لتصل إلى 536 مليار ريال..
و قد استحوذت المجموعة مؤخرا على حصة بنسبة 99.88% في "فاينانس بنك" التركي (حاليا QNB فاينانس بنك)، خامس أكبر بنك مملوك للقطاع الخاص في تركيا من حيث إجمالي الموجودات وودائع العملاء والقروض.
كما تمتك المجموعة نسبة 20% (أسهم عادية و ممتازة قابلة للتحويل إلى أسهم عادية) في Ecobank Transnational Incorporated، أحد أكبر وأهم البنوك في قارة أفريقيا.
وكانت المجموعة قد استكملت في عام 2013 عملية الاستحواذ على حصة مسيطرة بنسبة %97.12في ثاني أكبر بنك في جمهورية مصر العربية، هو بنك QNB الأهلي (QNB AA)، كما عززت مجموعة QNB من تواجدها الإقليمي من خلال الاستحواذ على حصص في عدد من المؤسسات المالية من بينها نسبة %35 من بنك الإسكان للتجارة والتمويل في الأردن، و%40 من البنك التجاري الدولي ومقره دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة، وعلى نسبة 99.96% من QNB - تونس، و%51 من بنك المنصور العراقي، و49% من مصرف التجارة والتنمية في ليبيا، ونسبة %20 من شركة الجزيرة للتمويل بالدوحة.
كما تمتلك مجموعة QNB حصة %51 في QNB - سورية وحصة 82.59% من بنك QNB إندونيسيا.
