O Programa de Pós-graduação em Letras da PUC Minas, iniciado em 1989, conta hoje com duas Áreas de Concentração: “Linguística e Língua Portuguesa” e “Literaturas de Língua Portuguesa”, ambas com cursos de Mestrado e Doutorado.

As áreas possuem quadro de docentes, linhas, projetos e organização curricular distintos, embora haja docentes e projetos interativos, possibilitando o trânsito e a interseção entre as duas áreas, o que reflete a crença e o empenho do Programa no diálogo interáreas, no caso, entre Linguística e Literatura, em prol, marcadamente, da pesquisa e do ensino voltados para a Educação Básica, em cujo nível se solicita o trato do objeto linguagem, considerado, simultaneamente, pela vertente linguística e literária..

Desde a sua implantação, o Programa tem recebido avaliações positivas da CAPES e, em 2012, manteve, no triênio 2010/2012, a nota 5, recebida nos triênios 2001-2003, 2004-2006, 2007-2009.

Ao longo de sua existência, o Programa já qualificou mais de 375 mestres e quase 117 doutores, que se encontram em exercício de ensino e pesquisa em diversas universidades e faculdades..
