In Hamburg eröffnete der Gastwirt Eberhard Knopf Deutschlands erstes ortsfestes Kino (in jenen Jahren dominierten noch die Zelt-Kinos auf den Jahrmärkten sowie kleine Ladengeschäfte mit Kinematoskopen, in die der Betrachter hineinblicken musste).
Knopf wurde am 24.
April 1858 in Werningerode bei Halberstadt im Harz geboren.
Mit seiner Frau Alwine Karoline Johanna (geb.
Schmidt) hatte Knopf einen Sohn, Friedrich Ludwig Leopold, sowie eine Tochter, Alwina Hertha Sophie.

30 Metern zu sehen: Die Ankunft eines Eisenbahnzuges, eine Einschiffung auf hoher See sowie ein Bauern-Wettreiten.
Das Publikum war begeistert, und so gründete sich Hamburgs erste ständige Filmbühne mit dem Namen „Knopf's Lichtspielhaus”.
Das genaue Gründungsdatum ist umstritten, denn Knopf meldete sein Gewerbe erst nach einer anonymen Anzeige im Februar 1901 an.
Und ein „richtiges“ Kinomatographentheater mit fest montierten Sitzplätzen richtete Knopf erst im Oktober 1906, im Nachbarhaus Nr.
19, wo zuvor „Hagenbeck´s Handelsmenagerie“ untergebracht war, ein.
