Cerro Negro distrito de Campo Belo do sul, era chamado antigamente de São Francisco de Cerro negro..
A origem do nome se dava pelo motivo de que, na localidade de Nove de Maio das Águas, onde nessa comunidade existe uma fonte d"agua que brota no meio das pedras de um despenhadeiro ao lado de um riacho que dizem ser água milagrosa, inclusive abençoada pelo profeta João Maria de Agostinho.
Nas proximidades de 9 de Maio, não distante a uns dois quilômetros, existem dois montes com morros gêmeos, mais ou menos uniformes, que ao redor dos morros se situam uma grande mata formada por muitas espécies de madeiras nativas juntamente com os majestosos pinheiros araucária, que projetavam sobre os morros gêmeos uma sombra escura, vista à distância, cuja sombra significava o preto, que também significava o negro.
Resultando nos dois morros as sombras dos pinheiros, como morro escuro que na linguagem popular dos nossos antepassados substitui-se por CERRO NEGRO..
O município teve sua emancipação através do decreto de Lei número 8.348, de 26 de setembro de 1991
