Em 1718, o arraial foi elevado à freguesia, através de medidas da administração colonial, sendo a paróquia declarada de natureza coletiva.
Seis anos mais tarde, foi nomeado o primeiro vigário de Catas Altas, então chamada de Catas Altas do Mato Dentro para diferenciar de Catas Altas da Noruega.
