Buchanan St.Prairie Grove, AR 72753 The Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Prairie Grove was organized between 1830 and 1832, soon after the founding of Prairie Grove.
This was the first Church to be organized in the community and also used as the first school.
The Rev.
Andrew "Uncle Buck" Buchanan came by ox-cart from Cane Hill, Arkansas to organize the Church and served as it's first pastor.
Among other early pastors were the Reverends W.M.
Reed, John Buchanan, James Carnahan, B.F.
Totten, F.R.
Earle, G.A.
Henderson, J.H.
Kelly, E.
Freyschlag, R.W.
Marrs..

The original building was used by Union soldiers as a hospital after the Battle of Prairie Grove during the Civil War, used for winter quarters in 1863, and was partly torn down for use in making coffins.
The remainder of the structure was later burned.

The second building was a frame building facing east.
It stood to the back of the present structure and was used as a school house.

According to Church records; the present structure is the third building the church has been housed in, was built in the late 1800's, and dedicated in April, 1890.
In later years; the church made application and was reimbursed by the federal government in 1905 for the destruction of the original building.
The money from this reimbursement was used to buy pews designed like the current building's window casings were purchased in 1906..

The first Missionary Society was organized in 1892 and the first Christian Endeavor was organized in 1897 by Rev.
John Kelly.

In later years the front of the church was remodeled, a vestibule was added with a small room on each side, and a choir loft was added at a later date.
In the early 1950's; three Sunday School rooms were built across the back of the church under the pastorate of Rev.
Glen Jones, the supply pastor at that time.

In 1959; The Bethel Grove Cumberland Presbyterian Church ceased to operate and Porter Presbytery gave the building to the Prairie Grove Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
It is annexed to the west of the main Church building and used as a fellowship hall and Sunday school rooms.

The first organ was presented to the church by Moses Rollins.
In 1965, A Baldwin Electric Organ was presented by Mr.
Lloyd Baggettt as a memorial to his wife, Mrs.
Edna Campbell Baggett..
