Detailed description is Commitee for the restoration of the Portland Opera House.
Portland, MI The Portland Opera House Committee has been formed to bring public awareness to the Portland Opera House in downtown Portland, (a vital part of Portland’s history), and to improve the chance of this local Gem’s restoration.
Volunteers, (including anyone with news articles, history, stories, and photos), are welcome and encouraged to contribute.
The Opera house makes up the 2nd and 3rd floors above the Pub and Brown's Pharmacy.
It was built in 1880 and operated as an Opera House through around 1920.
After that it still served the community in lesser roles.
In 1880, the opera house would have seated 800 to 1000 people! By 1920 fire code limited it to 600 people, even still very impressive in size, architecture, and design.
