Die Bezeichnung Petri leitet sich von der benachbarten Sankt-Petri-Kirche ab.
Ein Förder ist ein Einschnitt in das hohe Gelände am Elbufer, durch den man von der höher gelegenen Stadt an das Ufer der Elbe gelangte.
Da es mehrere solcher Förder gab, wurden sie durch die Bezeichnung der in der Nähe befindlichen Kirchen unterschieden.
Der Förder wurde bereits 1725 beseitigt.
Der westliche Teil der Straße hieß daher ab circa 1750 Petersberg.
Für den Bereich zum Elbufer hin hielt sich die Bezeichnung jedoch bis heute..
