Le Petit Trianon est un domaine du parc du château de Versailles, dans les Yvelines, en France, comportant un petit château entouré de jardins de styles variés.Dans les prairies et les bosquets à l'est du Grand Trianon, Louis XV, à l'instigation de Madame de Pompadour, confie en 1748 à Claude Richard, assisté dix ans plus tard de Bernard de Jussieu, l'aménagement d'un « jardin de plantes » qui traduit son intérêt passionné pour les expériences botaniques.
L'architecte Gabriel l'agrémente d'un jardin à la française et d'une ménagerie pour animaux ordinaires, à l'inverse de la proche Ménagerie royale, plus exotique, de Louis XIV.
Il édifie aussi au milieu des allées de verdure deux fabriques d'agrément et de détente, le Pavillon français et le Salon frais.En 1762, le Roi demande à son Premier architecte de construire un château d'un genre nouveau, qui dispense une vue sur les différents jardins.
Reconnu comme un chef-d'œuvre d'architecture du néo-classicisme naissant, cet édifice de plan carré, simple et épuré, aux quatre façades décorées de l'ordre corinthien, conjugue les talents de Gabriel, du sculpteur Guibert et de décorateurs qui apportent à l'intérieur le dernier goût, plus raffiné que riche, dans lequel une place privilégiée est réservée à la nature et à l'atmosphère champêtre.
Le rez-de-chaussée est dédié au service, l'« étage noble » comprend les pièces de réception avec trois salles entresolées à l'usage de la Reine et l'attique est formé des « appartements des seigneurs ».
La comtesse Du Barry, qui succède comme favorite de Louis XV à la marquise de Pompadour, inaugure le château en 1769.
