Canton's main park is today called Saab Park.
So how did it get that name? Peter Saab was an active, enthusiastic participant in many projects for the betterment of Canton.
He was also, as a relatively young man, a regular catcher on one of the adult fast-pitch Softball teams that played two games a night on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday nights at the Canton city park.
The town was stunned when Peter dropped dead of a heart attack on April 25, 1953, at the age of 42 leaving a wife and five children.
Peter's wife Genevieve "Ginny" John Saab, his brother Albert Saab, and his mother Lizzie Joseph Saab, continued to run Saab's successful Department Store on the east side of the square.

Jim Lacey, Sr., was the Canton alderman-at-large at the time.
An admirer of Peter's drive and character, he proposed naming the city park after Peter.
The other members of the board agreed with him.
So, just a year after Peter's death, on May 18, 1954, the park was officially dedicated as the "Peter Saab Memorial Field." The Canton High School band was on hand to perform several pieces during the ceremony.
Mayor Marion Simpson delivered a speech, and a bronze plaque 12 inches by 16 inches was unveiled before a large crowd, including Mrs.
Saab and the five children.

The Little League season then got underway at the newly named Saab Field.
Before 1953, the only lights at the field were on the Softball diamond.
With the coming of air-conditioning and television, fast-pitch Softball played out.
Taking its place in 1953 was semi-pro baseball, and the city replaced the old lights with brighter, bigger ones for the new baseball field.
The land where Saab Park sits today was used as a horse-racing track from the earliest days of the town.
It was routine for towns to put the race tracks in creek bottoms like Bachelor Creek's.
The land there was usually flat and required little dirt-moving, and the land usually flooded at some time in the year, making the land not fit for much else.

When baseball came along about 1900, the racetrack site was a natural place for ball playing.
And up until the 1930's the first high school football games were played there.
Well, with the death in 2008 of Emily Saab, widow of Albert Saab, not a member of the family with the name of Saab is left today in Canton.
Mrs.
David Buttress was a Saab and so you could count all of today's Buttresses as Saab descendants.
But all of Peter's and Ginny's children and both of Albert's and Emily's sons have left Canton.
The Saabs had quite a run in Canton, beginning with Mr.
and Mrs.
Anton Saab arriving here in 1905 from Lebanon by way of New Orleans and lasting until 2008.
