Pendik, İstanbul'un Anadolu yakasında yeralan ve Marmara Denizine sahili olan bir ilçesi.İsimİlçenin bilinen en eski adı Pantikapeun'dur.
Roma, Bizans, Doğu Roma ve Latin İmparatorluğu dönemlerinde her tarafı duvarla çevrili beş duvarlı anlamına da gelen Pantichion, Panlihion ve Tayni Tiyni isimleride kullanılmıştır.
Bu isimler Osmanlı döneminden itibaren değişikliğe uğrayarak günümüzde olduğu gibi Pendik olarak kullanılmaktadır.TarihPendik'teki en eski yerleşim olarak Makedonlar bilinse de yapılan kazılarda 3-4 bin yıllık insan kalıntıları bulunmuştur.
Roma ve Doğu Roma hakimiyetinin ardından 1080-1083'de Selçuklularda kaldıysa da, tekrar Latin İmparatorluğu eline geçmiştir.1306'da ise Osmanlı hakimiyetine girmiştir ancak bu Bizansın geri kazanma çabalarını doğurmuş ve 1329-1330 tarihlerinde Pelekanon savaşıyla bu çabalar sonuçsuz kalmıştır.
1400 yılında Yıldırım Bayezid döneminde Abdurrahman Gazi alana dek boş kalmış olan Pendik, bu tarihten itibaren tamamen Türk hâkimiyetindeki bir yerleşim yeri olmuştur.Osmanlı hâkimiyetinde küçük bir balıkçı kasabası durumunda bulunan Pendik, geçirdiği büyük bir yangınla tamamen kül olmuştur kaynaklara göre 1200 hane ve dükkânı kül eden 50 saatlik yangından sonra Ayan Meclisi Senato Hariciye Encümen Reisi Azaryan Efendi Paris'ten mühendis ve mimarlar getirterek yeni yerleşimin planlarını çizdirmiştir.
Planlara da şehir merkezine adının ilk harfini koydurtarak imzasını atmıştır.
Günümüzde Gazipaşa-İsmetpaşa ve Orhan Maltepe Caddelerinin oluşturduğu çizgiler hala ilçenin en işlek merkezi durumundadır.Osmanlı döneminden Gebze ilçesine bağlı bir köy iken daha sonra Üsküdar Mutasarrıflığına bağlı Kartal Sancağı bünyesinde bir nahiye olmuştur.
Nihayet 04.07.1987 tarihinde 19507 sayılı Resmi Gazete de yayınlanan 3392 sayılı kanun ile ilçe olmuş ve teşkilatlanmasını tamamlayarak 11.08.1988 tarihinde fiilen faaliyete geçmiştir.
